Begining in 1989,
the Jefferson Awards for Public Service has produced the
nation's only annual television special that highlights outstanding
community service. In 2003, the special was aired in over 130
markets across the country, airing over 220 times.
"Change the World: the Jefferson Awards," sponsored
by Johnson & Johnson and Levi Strauss & Co., is a half-hour
television special focusing on the role that real individuals
play in enhancing their own community in America today. The
program sends a clear message that "change in the community
begins with me." It brings viewers face-to-face with community
volunteers and visionaries who are making our country a better
place by living the American tradition of service.
Each year this National Television Special highlights five
extraordinary individuals in American cities across the country
who have earned the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
Award for Greatest Public Service Benefiting Local Communities
and whose dedication to community service makes them true examples
of the American spirit.
This program provides the viewing audience with positive role
models, whose accomplishments validate this idea, generating
inspiration for others on how civic engagement can contribute
to a healthy society and a successful democracy.
